[OFF THE MAT]
The House of Love is dedicated to bridging yoga, mental health care and activism. Founded in 2010, THoL’s mission is to use the power of yoga and sustainable activism to inspire and help others. To make yoga accessible for everyone, especially the (mental) vulnerable. Help people become curious and conscious, first of their own breath, body, mind and soul. And then help to create awareness of the power of their actions for themselves and others. This will ignite personal- and social change. We believe that a better world for everyone is possible. Little by little. Breath by breath.
Yoga is a powerful path of (personal) transformation. A the source, the word yoga means ‘union’ – of mind, body and spirit. Yoga opens our hearts and expands our awareness of self creating space for balance and deep change in our lives.
Karma service yoga is based on the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and understood as the yoga of selfless (altruistic) service. One of the four paths to realization, karma yoga is the process of achieving perfection in action. So, it can be said that Karma Yoga is the “discipline of action”. Selfless action.
The word karma is derived from the Sanskrit kri, meaning ‘to do’. In its most basic sense karma simply means action, and yoga translates to union. Thus karma yoga literally translates to the path of union through action. However, in Vedantic philosophy the word karma means both action and the effects of such action. Karma yoga is described as a way of acting, thinking and willing by which one orients oneself toward realization by acting in accordance with one’s duty (dharma) without consideration of personal self-centered desires, likes or dislikes. One acts without being attached to the fruits of one’s deeds.
